For the last couple of weeks, our friends from the North have been plucking up worms from the rain-sodden football field at Holsworthy. Every morning about 9 o'clock, the grass is full of fieldfares - 40 at the latest count on Sunday, December 27, along with a lone redwing. Very flighty, nervy birds, I haven't yet got a decent pic, but it's a delight to watch these handsome Scandinavian creatures building up their fat reserves from Devon worms. There's been the odd song thrush and m/f blackbirds in with the flock too. Just beautiful. Starlings too are enjoying my fat-filled bird-feeders, along with robins and blue tits. No takers for the nyger seeds from the resident goldfinches yet. They're already sprouting thanks to the rain, so I'll maybe make a salad...
